Phraseologisms with Names of Insects. This master's thesis analyses 618 Lithuanian phraseologisms with names of insects. All phraseologisms were collected from dictionaries and their electronic versions: “Frazeologijos žodynas” (2001), “Vaizdingieji lietuvių kalbos posakiai“ (2008)“, Palyginimų žodynas“ (2014). The aim of this thesis is to examine phraseologisms with names of insects from semantic and structural points of view. Phraseological application, structural grammatical, lexicographical and semantic research methods were mainly used in order to analyse the collected data. The thesis is divided into theoretical and practical part. Theoretical part defines the concept of phraseology, discusses two major approaches to phraseology, introduces linguistic criteria for distinguishing phraseologisms from free combinations and introduces classification of phraseologisms. Practical part is devoted to the analysis of semantic and strucural features of phraseologisms with names of insects. The analysis showed that most phraseologisms with names of insects refer to action modifiers (56 %), external features (17 %), states and feelings (11 %). Phraseologisms with names of insects rarely express internal features (7 %), quantity (6 %), actions (2 %) or other various subjects (1 %). The meanings of many phraseologisms are based on insect symbolism. Furthermore, the analysis demonstrated that the majority of phraseologisms with names of insects are comparative phrases: verbal (63 %) and adjectival (19 %). Phraseologisms with names of insects rarely have structure of a sentence (8 %). The minority of phraseologisms are verbal phrases (6 %), nominal phrases (4 %) and adjectival phrases (less than 1 %). |
