Abstract [eng] The main objectives of the master’s graduation dissertation are to ascertain the ways and means how pupils’ information skills are developed in school libraries in Lithuania, the causes which affect the information literacy of the pupils, the methods which should be used by librarians in order to improve the development of information skills of the pupils; to analyse and describe the ways and methods used to develop information skills in the libraries in foreign countries. The master’s graduation dissertation consists of four chapters. The first chapter describes the importance of the development of information skills. Such notions as information skills, development of information skills, information literacy, information competence and others are discussed with reference to the information and studies presented by professional librarians from foreign countries. The purpose of the second chapter is to describe the models of information skills’ development, which have been designed by foreign specialists, and their adjustment in Lithuania. The third chapter analyses the data about the development of information skills in libraries in foreign countries. Some information literacy questions and previously mentioned models are discussed in this chapter and some examples and suggestions on how to use information more effectively are presented. The levels of successful professional cooperation and their influence on the information literacy are also described there. The study fulfilled in the school libraries in Širvintos district is analysed in the fourth chapter. The aim of the study was to find out how information skills are developed, what difficulties arise and what mistakes are made. The experience of developing pupils’ information skills in Lithuania and abroad is compared. Referring to different collected material and applying the analysis of documents and scientific publications, the conclusion that it is essential to improve the development of pupils’ information skills by modernizing education system at schools can be drawn. Pupils’ information literacy is one of the main priorities organizing work in school library.
