Abstract [eng] The object of the dissertation is methodological, theoretical, methodical and practical manifestation of reading culture education in Lithuanian librarianship since 1918. The aim of the study is to explore questions of reading culture formation in Lithuanian pedagogical paradigm of library science and to find theoretical and practical opportunities of reading culture development among Lithuanian public library users. Scientific programme of the dissertation is accomplished in three parts. The first part of the dissertation discusses relations between culture of reading and lectology, reading and library pedagogy. Culture of reading is presented as structural part of lectology and library pedagogy. Topical pedagogical concepts were applied to examine issues of reading culture formation integrating library science knowledge in processes of reader education. The second chapter of the dissertation is devoted to the analysis of theory, methodology and technique of reading culture development in Lithuanian library science since 1918. The third part of the dissertation “Formation of reading culture in Lithuanian public libraries” presents results of practical research. Two sets of data gathered in the years 1984 and 2009 during the surveys of public library professionals were compared and analyzed. Aim of research was to present the tendencies of practical reading culture education in the context of theoretical and methodological development of the Lithuanian librarianship. The annexes of the dissertation provide extended results of practical research.
