Abstract [eng] It is important to take popular television seriously because it has become such an important part of our daily lives, and is playing increasingly important role in the perception of the real world. When studying television, there are four most common ways of approaching the subject: 1. In depth studies of content or texts of television. 2. The history of television and specifics of legal policies defining the landscape of television. 3. Analyzing television as an institution, the way it is organized, how it produces and distributes content. 4. Sociological study of television audiences. In this work I do not look into the first point – in depth studies of television content (texts). I feel it is very important to understand the environment in which television was developing in this region – therefore I cover both the history of television, analysis of television as institution, and the main factors affecting it, before progressing to the main point of my work – sociological analysis of television audiences. A broader academic approach to the subject is combined with the most precise empiric data available for measuring television viewing. The results are also interpreted on a cross country level. Analysis was done at the time when television was facing the time of key transformation – approaching end of analogue television, growing popularity of internet. The analysis is not fixated on the relationship of audiences and television in a single point in time, but also considers the trends in the perspective of the last decade.
