Abstract [eng] Coronary artery bypass grafting is one the most commonly performed surgical procedures worldwide. It is the last treatment option for patients suffering from coronary artery disease; therefore the expectations that surgery will improve further quality of life are high, as well as the stress experienced preoperatively. It is obvious that the perceived quality of postoperative life is partly determined by the psycho-emotional well-being of the patient. Determination of potential risk factors associated with postoperative neuropsychological impairment might not only help to stratify patient groups that are prone to developing postoperative cognitive decline, but moreover to use appropriate neuroprotective strategies. The aim of our study was to detect cognitive decline after on pump coronary artery bypass grafting and identify risk factors associated with this complication. We conclude, that POCD is most strongly associated with factors which are already present on admitting a patient to cardiac surgery, such as advanced age, generalized atherosclerotic disease and carotid arteries lesion. Another important finding, allowing us at least partly predict development POCD, is a correlation of this dangerous complication with severity of cardiac failure in postoperative period.
