The dissertation explores possibilities and questions concerning the manifestation of reflexivity in the German language. In linguistics, the concept of reflexivity refers to a language structure in which the agents (usually the subject and object) participating in the action expressed by the verb are the same. The object of research in this dissertation is reflexive verbs and other possible reflexive structures in modern German explored by the author on the basis of the criteria of word building, semantics, and syntax. Current language use is supported by examples of historical language use. First, the thesis describes the concept of reflexivity and other terminology related to this language phenomenon. Issues that are related to reflexivity in language and studied in modern grammar theory are provided. Subsequently, synchronic and diachronic research of the manifestation of reflexivity in German is carried out. With the use of examples selected for research from earlier stages of the development of German, trends in the development of verbs and relevant language structures from early written language resources to modern German are investigated. The aim of the thesis is to identify possibilities for the manifestation of reflexivity and patterns of building relevant verbs, structures, and words, as well as their semantic characteristics. Possible use of reflexive verbs and reflexive structures are illustrated by syntactic models and, on the basis of the historical material collected, development trends of certain groups of reflexive verbs and reflexive structures are identified. |
