Abstract [eng] Recently interest in the possibilities of development of art education in the art museums has grown. Therefore, the question how the museums contribute to the art education of visitors arises: what is the policy of museums in respect of art education, what is the subject matter and theoretical complexion of educational programmes dedicated to this type of education and do these programmes correspond to the requirements of new educational conception. The object of this study is the theories and practices of art education in the art museums. The main aim is to analyse the influence of art education theories to the educational activity of art museums. The tasks to achieve this goal were: To analyse the conception of art education and theories of art education ascertaining the main components that shape the content of art education; To characterise the concepts of educational activities in art museums and directions of the art education in museums of art; To distinguish the forms ant methods of art education used in museums of art; To analyse the tendencies of educational activities in Lithuanian art museums and educational programmes in 2006-2007 of Lithuanian art museums; To distinguish the main educational forms of Lithuanian art museums; To identify the directions of art education in Lithuanian art museums. In order to fulfill these tasks the descriptive-analytical, analysis of documents and comparative methods are used in the paper. The master work consists of introduction, developmental part, and conclusions. The first part of development is dedicated to the problems of art education. In the second part the manifestations of art education theories in the foreign art museums are analysed and the situation of Lithuanian art museums is discussed in the third one. The main problem is that a study that would present the conceptions of educational activities in the museums of art, the impacts of contemporary art education theories and the possibilities of their adoption in Lithuanian art museums does not exist. Therefore, the theme of this paper is new and relevant. This study could be useful for the educators of art schools, museums, and museum specialists. The programmes of different forms of art education is an important part of foreign art museums’ educational activity. According to the DBAE model the educational programmes of one piece of art are created. The complexion of interdisciplinary art education also exists and many art museums implement the VMS theory in their programmes of art education. The content of art education of art museums consists of the history of art, the theory of art, aesthetics, and the skills of analysis, perception, interpretation and evaluation of pieces of art of the visitors are developed. In Lithuanian museums of art the education is understood as one of the main remits of museum activities. The conceptions of educational activities can be perceived as the creation of active and cognitive interaction between the visitor and exposition or exhibited pieces of art of the museum. The educational programmes are prepared according to the theme of permanent and temporary expositions. Lithuanian art museums do not directly apply the theories of art education analysed in this paper creating different learning programmes. Educational activities are formed of historical and theoretical perspectives of art, meanwhile, tasks formed for art education are implemented to a small extent. There is a lack of tasks devoted to aesthetical perception and critical evaluation.
