Abstract [eng] The discovery of advanced optical materials with multiple superior qualities for display applications remains a difficult problem. The specific luminescence properties of multinary oxides are highly sensitive to the changes in dopant composition, host stoichiometry, and processing conditions. Part of the widely studied inorganic luminescent materials is the group of strontium aluminates. The current study aims on expanding the knowledge related to strontium aluminates in perspective of persistent phosphors. During this work, SrAl2O4, Sr3Al2O6, SrAl12O19 and Sr4Al14O25 were prepared by aqueous sol-gel route. All of these samples were monophasic, except closer investigation by Rietveld method of Sr3Al2O6 revealed that the sample is a mixture of several phases. Also, these strontium aluminates were doped with cerium. Sr3Al2O6:Ce, SrAl12O19:Ce and Sr4Al14O25:Ce exhibited photoluminescence emission at 480, 317 and 360-380 nm, respectively, while SrAl2O4:Ce did not show any luminescence. Moreover, Sr4Al14O25 samples with partial substitution of Sr by Ca or Ba were prepared using solid-state synthesis. Crystal structures of these samples were analyzed and unit cell parameters were determined. And finally, monophasic SrAl4O7 samples were prepared by both solid-state and sol-gel synthesis methods. Doped with Eu and co-doped with Dy samples showed luminescence with afterglow visible by naked eye.
