Abstract [eng] Men with newly diagnosed prostate cancer in 2003 and 2004 at the Institute of Oncology of Vilnius University were explored on this study. Aim: to investigate the relationships between prostate cancer malignancy, outspread and the patient age (at the time of diagnosis) at the Institute of Oncology of Vilnius University. Goals: 1) to evaluate the relationship between Gleason score and patient age at the time of diagnosis; 2) to evaluate the relationship between prostate cancer stage (according to TNM classification) and patient age at the time of diagnosis; 3) to evaluate the relationship between prostate-specific antigen (PSA) concentration level and patient age at the time of diagnosis. Materials and Methods: Clinical, radiological and pathological data were obtained from the clinical records of 383 patients (at the Institute of Oncology of Vilnius University) with newly diagnosed and histologically confirmed prostate cancer. Data were analyzed by SPSS statistical package (Version 11.0 for Windows). Statistical assessment and analysis were performed with the qui-square (χ2), ANOVA and Kruscal-Wallis H test with values of p < 0,05 being defined as significant. Results: For all age groups, a higher proportion of patients with prostate cancer had been verified with well differentiated (Gleason 6 or less) tumor (69,2 percent) (p<0,001). Men the age 76 and older with advanced (T3 or T4) prostate cancer (with penetration into neighbouring tissues or metastases to bones and lymph nodes) were diagnosed more often as compared to ones with T1-T2 cancer stage (p<0.005). The level 4-10 ng/ml of PSA cancer marker in blood at the time of diagnosis was the most frequently found level among the investigated group of patients. There was no significant association between Gleason score (5-6, 7 and 8-10), prostate cancer stage (T1-T2, T3-T4), prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and patients age groups. Conclusions. There was no statistically significant relationship between different groups of patients with prostate cancer concerning tumor cell differentiation (Gleasson score), prostate cancer stage (according to TNM classification) and the level of PSA concentration in blood investigated on this study.
