Abstract [eng] Cancer is a crisis. The illness causes feelings of insecurity and instability. The experience of these feelings is related to the inner belief that there is someone who can help, calm. Objective. The objective of the study is to explore the relationship between quality of life and traumatic reactions to cancer and to explore the relationship with authority as one of the factors contributing to coping with trauma of cancer. Methods. In the quantitative study there were 37 females afflicted with cancer, in the qualitative study there were 2 female cancer survivors. The Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30), Trauma Screening Questionnaire (TSQ) and also a semi-structured interview to investigate the relationship with authority were used in the study. Results. There was a significant negative relationship between traumatic reactions and emotional functioning, and a significant positive relationship between traumatic reactions and physical symptoms. Thematic analysis of two semi-structured interviews revealed five possible patterns of the relationship with authority (the authenticity/inauthenticity of relationship, destructiveness/constructiveness of the relationship, real/fantasized relationship, predictable/unpredictable relationship and the freedom in the relationship). Conclusions. The better quality of life is partly related to fewer traumatic symptoms and one of the important factors in better quality of life appeared to be the ability to maintain relationship with authority.
