Aim of the Research. to research the links between the features of the emotional intellect of nurses working at hospital divisions of different profiles and their happiness level and sociodemographic indexes. Tasks of the thesis: 1. To research and evaluate the emotional intellect of nurses and individual features of the emotional intellect. 2. To research and evaluate the happiness level of nurses. 3. To evaluate the links between the sociodemographic characteristics of nurses, individual features of the emotional intellect and happiness level. Materials and Methods.239 nurses participated in the research and were surveyed anonymously; 75 of them worked at the reanimation/intensive care unit (ICU), 91 – at the surgical unit and 73 – at the therapeutic unit. The data about the sociodemographic indexes was obtained and the questionnaire “Oxford Happiness Questionnaire” (validated by L. Gustainienė and E. Tamutienė in 2009) was used for the evaluation of the happiness level. The emotional intellect was measured by means of the Emotion Evaluation Scale (Schutte NS, Malouff JM, Bhullar N, 2009). The significance level chosen in the statistical data analysis was p<0,05. Results and Conclusions. After evaluating the general emotional intellect of nurses, the nurses of intensive care units got more points (120±11) than those of the surgical and therapeutic units. 1. The nurses working at intensive care units had a significantly higher emotional intellect and its features – ability to cognize, manage and use the emotions of other persons compared with the nurses of the surgical and therapeutic profile. 2. The nurses working at intensive care units gave the highest evaluation for their individual sense of happiness or psychical welfare significantly, but the nurses of the surgical and therapeutic profile evaluated it a little worse – they were not very happy. 3. A high emotional intellect, its features and a sense of happiness were higher significantly and they were related with younger age (up to 40), shorter working experience (up to 9 years), lower working load (≤ 1 tenure), day shift, higher education (higher university and non-university education), marital status and higher income (>500 euro). The emotional intellect has a significant direct relation with an individual understanding of happiness – the higher the emotional intellect is, the happier the respondents felt. |
