Facsimile publishing is a way of keeping old manuscripts making its copies as accurate as possible. It is an old publishing trend having its own tradition in Europe, though it became more active in Lithuania after it gained independence. During the 18 years of independence a huge effect has been made in this branch; a few valuable reproductions of old prints and manuscripts had been published, disposed during the middle war period. The object of this scientific work is textual facsimile publication in Lithuania from 1990 till 2007. The aim is to evaluate the state of facsimile publishing in the period mentioned above. The object is to discuss the theoretical aspects of facsimile publication, to emphasize similarities and differences with its related concepts, to review its history, different periods of facsimile publishing, to discuss its main criteria outlining its quality and ability to fulfill its expectation, to investigate the activeness of facsimile publishing in Lithuania in 1990-2007, to evaluate the quality of facsimile publishing in this period in Lithuania, to analyze some facsimile publications in order to see the progress comparing them to the older ones, to investigate the professional point of view of the publishing office towards the facsimile publishing and determine the position of the publishing office as a cultural conservator in relation with the facsimile publishing. The documental method of analysis of content and analytical critical analysis of the literature has been used to evaluate the facsimile publishing. Also, having concluded the results gained by the experts of the field it became clear that there is still no exact facsimile terminology, so there is a need to define its concepts. As a result of the uncertainty the publishers are able to interpret the functions of facsimile publishing in their own way. Due to some expenses, a purchaser is not able to use a reproduction as a valuable copy, because it needs to be improved by specialists and the use of expensive modern technologies, which cannot be afforded. During the period mentioned, not a single facsimile publication has been published according to all the facsimile publishing criteria in Lithuania, so these are called the publications of the facsimile type. The experts do not forecast any possibilities of making better quality facsimile publications; because the market is very limited and the financial investments would never buy off. As a result, it is advisable to publish facsimile publications abroad. |
