Abstract [eng] One of the international human rights – right to have a name - is being analized in the assay. It shows the connection with another wide and not strictly limited right to respect of private and family life. Right to a name is revealed as the part of personal identity. International human rights instuments are being examined with focus on United Nations and The Council of Europe instruments. The author is looking for documents that guaranties the protection of the right to a name and privacy and compares them. The notion of right to a name is discoved with the help of organs‘ of human rights protection practice. A right of the child to be registered and to have a name from birth, the role of the parents and state is analised. The problem of the family name passing on children is analised through the principle of spouses equality. The woman‘s status in the states and the position of International bodies on the rights of choosing the family name in marriege is also studied. The reason of changing one‘s name and the significance of it for transsexual persons is revealed in the Part IV. It is also searched for specific problems regarding the regulation of the members‘ of national minoritines right to a name, where the sample of Lithuanian polish problem about the names indication in official cocuments is analised.
