Abstract [eng] This thesis analyses the theoretical background of the problem preparing former foster-children from foster homes for their independent life. It is hypothesized that former pupils of foster institutions are not good enough at mastering skills which are necessary for an independent life. The aim of the questionnaire survey was to reveal the factors which determine the independent life problems of former foster-children. A quantitative analysis of the data has been done. 150 former foster- children and 75 social workers from 5 foster homes i.e. Antazave’s, Kursenai, Plunge’s, Raseiniai and Kedainiai have participated in the research. In the empirical part of the research the preparation for independent life of former foster- children is analysed. Besides, their attitude towards acquiring skills of social life, getting a shelter, family life and education is revealed. What is more, one can find the analysis of social workers’ attitude towards the socialization of foster-children and the methods which stimulate the process of socialization. The most important conclusions of the empirical research: The youngsters, who grew in children foster homes, lack social skills necessary for their independent life. Institutions of children’s foster care only partly create possibilities of preparation for an independent life. The reasons of that are complex inefficiency of social and educational programs as well as too big care and dependence on the system. Former foster-children’s integration into society is problematic due to gaps in law system. After leaving foster homes, young people have to face problems of accommodation, career and work. Insufficient development of individual social help and lack of some institutions aggravate the process of socialisation of former foster- children. Former foster- children lack self-confidence. Their model of a future family is rather vague. Close cooperation of social partners is essential in order to ensure a qualitative social service for former foster – children.
