Abstract [eng] |
This master thesis focuses on economic and social factors that influence international migration processes in Lithuania during the period of 2003-2008. The major labor market indicators are identified that have been strongly affected by international migration process in Lithuania. The theoretical part of the thesis describes the interpretations of international migration concepts, explains major theories on migration causes, reveals prior literature by Lithuanian researchers on international migration factors, analyses and classifies their research results of migration influence factors on economy and labor market. The analytical part of master thesis estimates the size of migration in Lithuania during the economic growth period. It compares Lithuania and point-of-destination countries’ economic factors (GDP, minimal and average wage, unemployment level, long-term and young adult unemployment), social security factors (social security system expenses, average social security pension size), and demographic indicators. Statistically significant relationship was determined between Lithuania and point-of-destination countries’ GDP per capita, minimal and average wage, unemployment level, young adult unemployment and long-term unemployment, social security system expenses, average social security pension size and the size of immigrant population in Lithuania. The comparative analysis of changes in Lithuanian labor market indicators, the determinants of international migration in Lithuania and the number of unemployed, unemployment level, long-term unemployment, occupancy, labor force potency level, and their statistical relationships are provided in the constructive part of this research. The major determinants of international migration on labor market during the economic growth period are found. Scientific research hypothesis is partially consistent as the research results support that when approaching the analogical point-of-destination countries’ indicators the size of emigration is not decreasing; while the immigrant population is growing in Lithuania. |
