Abstract [eng] The contribution deals with the representation of Vilnius in German-language travel literature and the role that Vilnius’s multilingualism and multiculturalism play in it. Both aspects are scrutinised from the perspectives of literary studies and sociolinguistics by analysing a corpus of historical travelogues (16th–20th cc.) and modern travel guides. The text analysis ascertains that the perception of Vilnius is in transition: once Vilnius was labelled as a multi-ethnic and multicultural city, but in the travel guides of the last thirty years, it tends to be represented as Lithuania’s predominantly monocultural centre. Since Vilnius epitomises the findings, they are relevant for the entire Baltic region and its urban spaces. This may compel research to broader investigations.
