Abstract [eng] Metabolic syndrome is a dysfunction in metabolism of the body associated with hypertension, altered glucose tolerance, enlarged body mass and dyslipidemia. The risk of development of the condition can be increased by the presence of a mental health disorder. As psychiatric patients tend to be less invested in their physical well-being due to psychiatric health concerns, the role of medicine specialists‘ guidance is of great importance as it can provide tools and methods on how to adjust individual‘s lifestyle so it would benefit the physical health. The survey was conducted in Republican Vilnius Psychiatric Ward in spite of evaluating medical personnel‘s knowledge about metabolic syndrome, as well as its diagnostic and prevention. Overall, 116 people filled out the form. 57,8% of all respondents were nurses. The most common evaluation chosen by respondents regarding their knowledge about metabolic syndrome was 8 points (28,4%), on a scale from 1 to 10 points. 76,7% of staff surveyed have never attended a scientific event where information surrounding metabolic syndrome, its clinical manifestation, diagnostics, and prevention was presented. Statistically significant correlation between medical personnel’s education level, their work position and their answers to the questions given was discovered. Assisting staff were more likely to agree that the evaluation of the patient’s physical health suspecting the development of metabolic syndrome was of no importance. 50,8% of people surveyed presented with limited knowledge on how to help the patients form healthy eating habits, 29,3% of all respondents felt unconfident about the amount of information known about adverse effects of medication commonly prescribed in psychiatry.
