This Master's thesis aims to describe illustrative sentences generated by ChatGPT in Lithuanian by conducting a qualitative linguistic analysis of said sentences. Another goal of this thesis is to evaluate the quality of illustrative sentences generated by ChatGPT and compare them to illustrative sentences found in the Dictionary of the Standard Lithuanian Language. This research questions the possibility of transferring illustrative sentences generated by AI to a hypothetical dictionary. The suggested hypothesis states that illustrative sentences found in the Dictionary of the Standard Lithuanian Language are at the moment of higher quality than the ones generated by ChatGPT. The transfer of illustrative sentences generated by ChatGPT is currently impossible without additional lexicographer’s editing. The theoretical part of this thesis includes most important lexicographical and AI-related terms, main principles of the Dictionary of the Standard Lithuanian Language, description of ChatGPT and its ties with lexicographical research. The empirical part encompasses syntactic, morphologic, lexical and pragmatic aspects of illustrative sentences generated by ChatGPT and the results of a survey where respondents were asked to evaluate if generated sentences sound authentic or not. The description of other aspects of AI-generated illustrative sentences and of sentences found in the Dictionary of the Standard Lithuanian Language are also included in this part. The end of the empirical part contains the comparison of illustrative sentences generated by ChatGPT with illustrative sentences found in the Dictionary of the Standard Lithuanian Language. The study shows that illustrative sentences generated by ChatGPT are syntactically similar to each other and not much semantic, lexical, morphological variety is found amongst them. The number of generated sentences is also low compared to the Dictionary of the Standard Lithuanian Language. Due to these findings one can conclude that it is possible to supplement a dictionary with lexicographically edited illustrative sentences generated by ChatGPT but not replace the illustrations usually found in a dictionary. This Master's thesis is relevant to the researchers of lexicography, lexicographers and the general public. |
