Author: Margarita Martinėlytė Aim: To determinate postoperative side effects of general anesthetics and investigate the perspectives of patients and anesthesiologist/intensive care doctors on them. Objectives: To identify the postoperative side effects of general anaesthetics experiences by patients, to determine the frequency of side effects associated with general anaesthetics, to investigate the perspectives of anesthesiologists and intensive care doctors on the side effects of general anesthetics, to establish correlations between the occurrence of side effects and previously administered substances, to review the actions taken by anesthesiologists and intensive care doctors in response to side effects of anesthesia. Methodology: A anonymous survey was conducted, with anesthesiologist reanimatologists participating in one and patients who had undergone anesthesia in another. The surveys were conducted using the Google Forms platform, and paper surveys were distributed in healthcare institutions. All anesthesiologist reanimatologists in Lithuania and patients from Rokiškis Hospital and the Republican Panevėžys Hospital participated in the study. A scientific publication review was also performed. Results: During the study, 106 anesthesiologist reanimatologists and 169 patients who had undergone anesthesia procedures were surveyed. The physicians were categorized into five different groups based on their years of experience. It was observed that the majority of respondents in the survey were physicians with less than 15 years of experience. In the patient survey, participants were also divided into different age groups and by their biological gender. The number of men was slightly higher than that of women, while the age distribution was observed across five age groups. The study revealed the perspectives of both anesthesiologist reanimatologists and patients on anesthesia and potential side effects of anesthetics. The research helped to identify the main issues related to possible side effects of anesthetics. |
