Abstract [eng] Tomas Tverijonas. Motives for adolescents’ engagement in video games. MA final thesis in the educational and child psychology studies. Supervisor dr. prof. Laimutė Bulotaitė. Vilnius University, Faculty of Philosophy. Vilnius, 2024. Some studies show that the problematic involvement of adolescents in video games is determined by the levels of basic psychology need satisfaction and frustration, while other studies show that the motives of the game are main predictor (the reasons why they play). And more recently, one studys began to analyze how motives can explain that the frustration of needs predicts problematic engagement in gaming. Statistically significant results were found that led to the assumption that the frustration of needs predicts those motives that predict problematic engagement. Since there are still not so many studies (especially with adolescents) on this significant median relationship, it is important to continue research into the motives behind adolescent involvement in video games. The aim of this study was to reveal the peculiarities of motives for adolescents’ involvement in video games. This study involved 190 adolescents (aged 14 to 18 years). Methods used in this study was Demetrovics et al. (MOGQ, 2011) The motives for online gaming questionnaire. Van der Kaap-Deeder (BPNSFS, 2020) The Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction and Frustration Scale. Pontes & Griffiths (IGDS9-SF, 2015) Internet Gaming Disorder Scale–Short-Form. The results of the study showed that male adolescents get involved in video games longer and more problematically. Adolescents who are more likely to play video games using computers have a higher risk of video game addiction. The motives of male adolescents to play video games are more strongly expressed than those of girls. Different genres of video games are associated with different motives. The more the needs of adolescents are frustrated, the more they play video games to escape from reality. And this leads to their problematic engagement in video games.
