Abstract [eng] |
Research rationale: Stroke is one of the most common causes of disability, dementia and death in Western countries. Annual incidence is 150 - 200 cases per 100,000 population. The increasing number of strokes is predicted due to an aging population, more frequent diabetes, obesity and smoking. There are warnings about the risk of repeated strokes and the effects of psychological stress, along with physical, cognitive and communication problems. Untreated depression and anxiety can hinder recovery and reduce quality of life. Therefore, art - based therapies that are playful and without side effects are recommended to alleviate stroke symptoms. Various artistic modalities can be beneficial by stimulating different parts of the brain and increasing neuroplasticity, contributing to the recovery process. The aim of the study: To investigate the experience of individual drama therapy sessions of medical rehabilitation patients with stroke. Subjects: Inpatient medical and supportive rehabilitation patients who experienced a stroke and had different symptoms of the disease (aphasia, apraxia, disorders of consciousness, consequences of intracerebral hemorrhage) participated in the study. The age of the patients ranged from 40 to 80 years. Research methodology: The research was conducted and described based on a qualitative research strategy. A semi-structured interview, an observation diary, photos of patients' creative works were used for data collection. A selected thematic analysis method according to Braun and Clarke (2006) was used for the data analysis. Date of the study: October - December 2023. The study was conducted in a rehabilitation center during medical rehabilitation process. Research results: Four themes were revealed after the thematic analysis: 1) Consequences of stroke and their impact on the patient; 2) Patient rehabilitation processes and life prospects; 3) The role of drama therapy in the rehabilitation process; 4) Art therapy in medical rehabilitation, nurses' point of view. Conclusions: Based on the data analysis, it can be said that individual drama therapy sessions are an effective and useful method of medical rehabilitation for stroke patients to improve their mental health and well-being. The sessions allow them to express themselves, relax and find inner strength, while various drama therapy techniques help patients overcome challenges and create positive interactions with others. |
