Abstract [eng] |
Humans have arguably coevolved with viruses prior to the emergence of our species. Although viruses are strongly associated with disease and danger, they hold vast potential for utility in modern science and clinical medicine. By reviewing the existing literature investigating the mutualistic aspects of the virus-human relationship, this paper presents several arguments from a broad range of disciplines, and also discusses viral classification strategies and challenges. A brief overview of the diagnostic techniques developed to combat these very challenges has also been provided. Viruses contribute to various aspects of human biology, from the earliest stages of conception to the maintenance of gut homeostasis and immunological benefits lasting for several decades. Due to their amenability to modification of genome and epitope displays, ability to ligate with fluorescent dyes, or exert evolutionary pressure on bacterial cultures, viruses present a promising area of research worthy of further investigation. |
