SUMMARY Human citizenship is one of the most important parts of the nationality of a free, independent political society. Social sciences in the modern state define citizenship as the process where an individual becomes a member of a civil community and belongs to a specific state. The daily accelerating processes of scientific and technological improvement, world-wide globalization pose challenges to both the nation and the state. General education and non-formal education schools in Lithuania help students prepare for life and aim to educate conscious citizens who understand their responsibilities and rights. One of the most important means of musical expression, with which students can be educated in citizenship, is the deep traditions of Lithuanian folk music and its development. The aim of the master's thesis is to investigate the possibilities of citizenship education based on informal musical activities. In order to achieve the aim of this academic work, the following tasks were set: to define the concept of citizenship; discuss how citizenship is developed; indicate what musical activities have an impact on the development of citizenship of students; reveal the aspects of citizenship education opportunities based on the analysis of teachers' experiences. The object of the research is citizenship education through informal musical activities. The work was carried out by analyzing the scientific literature, articles and studies of Lithuanian and foreign authors as well as national documents. After analyzing the scientific literature and conducting a qualitative study, the following conclusions were drawn: the concept of citizenship corresponds to notions such as responsibility, respect, patriotism, communality, civic activism, performance of duties, nurturing of national values. Citizenship can be developed through project activities, volunteering, participation in the student council, involvement of the local community, various musical and artistic projects, and participation in cultural exchanges. The following musical activities influence citizenship education: playing in the choir, orchestra and ensemble, as well as concert activities, international musical exchanges, musical discussions. The aspects of opportunities for citizenship education are the following: in non-formal education, pedagogues can distance themselves from general education programs and create those themselves. Concert activity as a phenomenon contributes to the growth of civic personality and the formation of social responsibility.
