SUMMARY The subject of the Master's thesis "The Expression of Calendar Holidays in the Activities of Cultural Centres": the expression of calendar holidays in the activities of cultural centres. The aim of the study: to analyse the expression of calendar holidays in the activities of cultural centres in the district. The objectives of the study are: to analyse the significance of the activities of cultural centres for the organisation of calendar festivals; to provide a classification of traditional calendar festivals and the peculiarities affecting the expression of festivals; to investigate the peculiarities of the expression of traditional calendar festivals in the organisation of cultural centres in the district. A qualitative research strategy was chosen for the empirical study of the Master's thesis. The method of data collection is semi-structured interview, which is used to collect data from the artistic directors of cultural centres regarding the organisation of calendar festivals. Content analysis is used to process and analyse the data obtained and to interpret it. Nine informants were selected for the study, who work in cultural centres in different districts of Lithuania, have more than 10 years of work experience and higher education. This experience of the informants allowed to expect more detailed and varied answers. The study concludes. Cultural centres provide services or organise events according to the needs of the population. There are three levels of impact of the activities of cultural centres: on cultural fields and creators, on society and the community, and on the local environment. The diversity of services and events, the purposefulness of the content and the artistic quality of the events are essential for the realisation of the expression of the calendar festivities. Lithuanian calendar festivals were closely linked to the work and way of life of people engaged in agriculture. The calendar was then based on the division of the year into seasons according to the equinoxes and solstices, which is why many authors distinguish three main festivals in the old Lithuanian calendar year cycle – Saint Jonas‘s Festival, Forefathers' Eve and Shrove Tuesday. The District's cultural centres organise calendar festivals to fulfil their function of organising cultural events. Interest in traditional calendar festivals is declining as they are being replaced by modern festivals coming from different countries, which have more attractive attributes, celebratory character etc. In order to ensure the continuity of traditions, it is necessary for cultural centres to find attractive ways of engaging the public, and especially young people, to become active participants rather than passive spectators. |
