Abstract [eng] The topicality. Unemployment is a major problem in the 21st century, being both economic and social issue. Not everybody is able to adapt to the rapidly changing labour market. The high-speed change determines occupations in demand, thus, influences the human unemployment. Therefore, often in order to get employed, the available skills of the unemployed are not enough. Viewpoint to the professional career of the unemployed presented by various Lithuanian and foreign authors are analysed and systematize in the Master thesis. In the empirical part of thesis there is an attempt to find out what is the viewpoint to the professional career of the unemployed residing in rural and urban areas. The aim of the research is to ground theoretically and investigate empirically the unemployed residing in rural and urban areas view to the professional career. The object of the research is the viewpoint to the professional career of the unemployed. Research methodology. The study‘s conceptual framework is based on A. Maslow‘s theory of needs, where a personal decision, deeds are treated as a desire to meet own needs. The decision theory is also appealed to. Human decisions can be rational and irrational, based on the clearly formulated and underlying assumptions. Research methods: Theoretical – analysis of the scientific literature. Empirical – the questionnaire method. Data Processing – a method of statistical analysis where SPSS 17.0 software package was used. The Survey Sampling and organization. The survey was conducted in the elderate Aukstelkai of Radviliskis district and in a social welfare department of Radviliskis district Municipality. For the aim of the research 192 questionnaires were distributed, 174 questionnaires were returned filled in. In order to determine the sample, a random group selection method was applied, as the general sample was known, i.e. the unemployed registered in Lithuanian Labour Exchange and those applying for social benefits. Major conclusions. The main differences between the unemployed residing in rural and urban areas approach to professional career emerged. The unemployed residing in the city would like to work by education while the unemployed in rural areas are more likely to do any kind of job. There number of willing to develop professionally between urban residents is also significantly higher than the rural ones. City residents, unlike in the village, are driven by the desire for self-realization. In order to change this situation, majority of the respondents are planning to look for work actively on their own, as well as to develop professionally.
