Abstract [eng] Principal goal of educational system is to ensure popularly accessible, efficient and modern education satisfying both individual and communal needs of contemporary society. This thesis considers offices of special educational services in rural elementary schools. Main purpose of this research has been to investigate particularities in provision of special educational services in rural comprehensive schools. The thesis deals with conception of special education and special needs, special education process, organisation of special education process and provision of special educational services in comprehensive schools and peculiarities in provision of special pedagogical assistance at rural elementary schools. A survey by questionnaire has been carried out among 100 teachers of rural elementary classes in the Mariampolė County, enabling educators to express their views on work experience gained with pupils having special educational needs, on services provided by specialists, on involvement of children, parents and specialists in a special educational process. The research data have shown that the integration of children with special needs into rural comprehensive schools is not sufficiently good despite having a legal background. Schools are not properly prepared: educators are lacking relevant qualifications and experience to work with children of special needs, educational institutions are lacking specialists, physical and social environment of schools are not adapted, schools have poor material facilities, and the involvement of specialists, parents and children in the educational process is not satisfactory.
