Abstract [eng] Asta Sileikiene. Criminological aspects of coercion against women in a family / supervisor Doc. Dr. I. Michailovic; Vilnius University, Faculty of Law, Department of Criminal Justice. Vilnius, 2011. – 92 p. Aim of the master’s thesis – to examine criminological aspects of coercion against women in a family. The goals have been set to achieve this aim: to study genesis of coercion against women in a family; examine characteristics of coercion against women in a family: causes, types, forms, consequences; to examine characteristics of the social, legal assistance and preventive work with women experiencing domestic coercion; conduct a quantitative study in Vilnius region in order to explain characteristics of women's coercion in a family. Thesis submitted for defence: family is a primary institute of personal development, socialization and maturity, so it requires special attention and protection; Changes of social values make assumptions to change the institute of the family and conditions for a woman in a family and a state; but it could be already felt that the origins of patriarchalism inhibit a woman; Coercion against women is based on various scientific theories, but contra and complex human behavior is essential to characterize their interactions; Experience or observation of abuse in childhood make assumptions to become a very aggressive person and have reached the perpetrator model; family's financial situation is a key indicator to form positive relationships; low family income reduces the self-confidence and creates conditions for aggressive behavior. Master's thesis consists of two parts. The paper examines the concept of social negativism - coercion and abuse, focused on the family institute and its change, legal regulation as well. There are aspects of the source for coercion against women in a family discussed, also the statistics of the Republic of Lithuania and other foreign countries (Germany, Poland, Russia, Canada, USA, Scandinavia) are compared to the work of the author - survey indicators in the area of Vilnius, which was attended by 127 respondents. The thesis deals with causes of coercion against women, with an emphasis on gender stereotypes, alcohol and violent behavior interfaces, the dominant society patriarchalism origins. According to the Lithuanian and American studies which examine the types of coercion against women, forms of coercion and criminal consequences to a woman, also legal implications to a violator. The second part of the thesis intends to discuss social, legal assistance and preventive work. Following the literature and statistical analysis helped to notice that coercion against women is one of major national and international issues. In particular, it relates to family financial indicators, dominant origins of patriarchlism, also the monitoring, experiencing coercion in childhood. The most commonly used is psychological coercion, and the husband / cohabiting partner is the most violent family member.
