Abstract [eng] Old and changing Lithuanian history left a deep imprint in the culture of our country. The culture became a resting pole in the most difficult times of our history. The question of the Lithuanian culture development became an important question in our society. This Master thesis „The image of culture and heritage in the Lithuanian media“ analyzes the themes of culture and heritage as well as their portrayal in the Lithuanian media. The themes of culture an heritage are analyzed in periodicals, internet sites as well as in Lithuanian televisions. Using the content analysis method the development of Lithuanian culture life is analyzed in the internet site “Delfi” rubric “Kultūros parkas”. In order to create the image of culture and heritage it is important to define the definitions of culture and heritage. There are a number of definitions of the two concepts in literature. The concept of culture is one of the most difficult words. The many definitions of culture reveal the importance of human existence as well as the human worldview. Human beings create culture and trough it they find a sense of life. The contemporary cultural change process is influenced by the mass culture invasion. This way culture gains a number of different forms of expression. Mass media is quickly transforming. Information technologies provided new opportunities for its development. Mass media has important influence in forming the worldview of the audiences. Thus, it is important to analyze the relations between media and culture. The media reflects culture in society and allows to become acquainted with various forms of culture. Mass media provides various views for the multiple audiences that are different in their interests and cultural understanding. Depending on the worldview every person creates a different image of culture portrayed in mass media. The mass media analyzed in this thesis has its own view to culture and its expression. National papers do not pay a lot of attention to the culture theme – they reflect more culture news of the world. The specialized press uses the intellectuals with the discussions left only in the pages of the press. Internet webpages are ambitious, but not in representing the cultural life. The internet webpage “Delfi” rubric “Kultūros parkas” is only partially carrying out the mission of cultural development. The rubric describes and announces events, but the descriptions of the expression of cultural life are only about Lithuanian capital Vilnius. There is no attention given to the analysis of the cultural problems, the problems of the artists or other people interested in culture. The Lithuanian national broadcaster is different from all the Lithuanian commercial televisions because of the mission to give more attention to the cultural life and its problems. Describing the situation of the heritage, it is changing thanks to the mass media. The mass media has drawn away from the heritage problems and now it is creating a modern concept of heritage in society. The culture and heritage values are the major capital of the nation that needs to be talked about. The threshold between society and culture and heritage must not be enlarged. Culture and heritage are one of the important factors forming the nation’s distinction. Their concepts can be a foundation when defining the past and the contemporary culture and heritage identity as well as to finding out what lies in the future generations.
