Abstract [eng] Social and economic changes that take place in the globalised world raise increasingly newer and broader requirements for professionals in different areas and highlight the importance of competences. The task of modern midwives is to change the public attitude to the woman, to the health of all the family, with emphasis on education and a healthy lifestyle. In this context, the relevance of the discussed topic, the expression of the midwives’ competencies in the field of family education, is given a sense. The goal of the research is to determine the expression of competence of health care professionals (midwives) and effectiveness in the field of family education. The object of the research is expression of competences of health care professionals (midwives) in the field of family education. Prerequisites for expression of competences of health care professionals (midwives) in the field of family education are described in the theoretical part of the paper on the grounds of the theory of personality self-awareness and self-expression, humanistic concept of education, ideas of holistic education and insights of the theory of experiential learning. The following objectives were set for the quantitative research: to analyze the expression of health care professionals’ (midwives’) competences and experience in the field of family education, to evaluate the attitude of families to expression of midwives’ competences, to reveal the opportunities for development of the midwives’ competences in the field of family education by comparing the professionals’ and the customers’ attitudes. The research data were collected using the method of questionnaire survey; the sample is 68 midwives and 240 Siauliai Woman and Child’s Clinic clients and their family members. The data of the research were processed by Microsoft Excel 2013 software. The research data have confirmed the hypothesis that the expression of health care professionals’ (midwives’) competences in the field of family education is insufficient. Although both professionals working in the field of woman and baby care and future parents acknowledge that the midwife is an educator, changing the attitude of society to the health of a woman and all the family, the subjective evaluation of expression of midwives’ competences shows that the expression of competence in the field of family education is insufficient. Future parents, who positively evaluated the expression of midwives’ professional competence, the competences of effective educational activity, communication and cooperation, emphasized the significance of education skills and their improvement.
