Prof. Vygantas Gruslys Vilnius, 2009 Keywords: endotracheal intubation, postintubational complications, prevention of postintubational complications. Goal of the research work. This study aimed to determine role of nurses in prevention of postintubational (post tracheostomial) complications as well as compare usual practices of care in addition to finding out which factors influence the quality of care the most. Tasks of research work. To determine factors, the most affecting intensive care nurses work. To investigate intubational or tracheostomal tubes care knowledges and skills of intensive care nurses. To determine how nurses knowledges, experience and skills can affect postintubational complications rate. Population of research work. 102 Anesthesia and Intensive care nurses, their professional skills, knowledge related to endotracheal intubation. Methodology of research work. There was created questionnaire in order to determine depth of knowledge about care and complications of this medical issue for care providers of different education and experience level at Anesthesia and Intensive care department to answer anonymously. Results of the study were analysed using SPSS 11.0 for Windows. Results and conclusion of research work. Results of the study showed that the biggest impact on quality of work of nurses in intensive care units is caused by poor organization, stress, financial and emotional unappreciation of workforce effort (possibly short staffing as well). Even though University graduates knowledge level about complications, care and management of patient with intubational or tracheostomal tubes was significantly higher the level of knowledge of the mid and lower level personnel was sufficient so did not play significant role in quality of care. Conclusion. Even though awareness of university graduates about care of patients with tracheostomal or intubational tube on ventilator and prevention of complications is significantly more thorough all levels of personnel taking care of patients with tracheostomal or intubational tube on ventilator knowledge level is sufficient and problem hides in application of that knowledge.
