Abstract [eng] |
Lithuanians view democracy as a political system, a form of government that epends on society and the will of the majority: democracy is achieved through free elections; decisions are taken by consensus; opinion of every citizen is respected; racial, gender and social equality and human freedoms are ensured. Tolerance and justice prevail in democracy and all the citizens feel safe and participate in the government of their state, collective or political party. Lithuanians have frmly chosen the path of governing the state according to principles of Western democracy. Although they know and endeavour to nurture its main values, democracy in Lithuania is still an aspiration: it has to be learnt and it is different than in the West. The elites have been trying to identify the reasons why democracy is difcult to achieve in society; one of them are the ambitions of those in power to use democracy for personal goals, revenge and fghts. Society is frustrated by constant failures and the spread of neoliberal ideas, but its members are unable to liberate themselves from the Soviet way of thinking. At present, democracy is associated with a number of things that have nothing to do with it. It is frequently forgotten that democracy is not chaos or anarchy: unlimited liberty violates the principles of democracy and becomes uncontrollable – democracy involves certain rules which have to be followed. |
