Abstract [eng] Introduction/aim. Since variceal recurrence following endoscopic treatment is inevitable, the determination of new risk factors contributing to the recurrence of esophageal varices is clinically significant. The aim was to assess the role of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) in predicting the recurrence of esophageal varices (RV) following endoscopic band ligation (EBL) for patients with liver cirrhosis and portal hypertension. Objectives of the study: to perform systematic literature analysis, to evaluate the rate of RV after EBL during one year period, to identify the risk factors affecting RV after EBL by evaluating the esophageal collateral veins (ECV) detected by EUS. Methods. Prospective analysis of 40 patients with esophageal varices who had been treated by EBL was performed. EUS was performed before EBL and ECV were evaluated. Repeated EBL sessions were performed every 2 to 3 week until esophageal varices were eradicated. After all EBL sessions were completed, patients were observed for variceal recurrence and upper endoscopy was performed every 3 months for a follow-up period of 12 months. The relationship between the EUS findings prior to EBL and the RV rate and time was analyzed to detect the possible risk factors. Results/conclusions. In the literature the role of EUS in predicting RV after EBL is not widely discussed and existing data are conflicting. We found that recurrence of esophageal varices after EBL is common. For one-third of the patient variceal recurrence is an early variceal recurrence. EUS can clearly depict ECV and has a value in predicting variceal recurrence after EBL. The type, grade and number of ECV, detected by EUS differently impacts on variceal recurrence following EBL.
