Abstract [eng] There are two dimensions of poverty – economic (monetary) and non economic poverty. The talk about the poverty of society started in the second half of the 17th century. Then, this term was understood as the lack of income for the main needs (such as household, food, safety, etc.) At the end of 20th century, the understanding of the term considerably expanded and the sociology scientists attributed the spiritual, value, intellectual and social aspects to the concept of poverty. The members of social risk families are those who find it difficult going through poverty, the poverty to them is not only a financial difficulty but also the deviation of non material values, which leads to bad quality of life and poor existential being. In order to contribute to the relevant and important poverty reduction system in Lithuania, the selected subject of investigation for Master's work – the possible strategy of overcoming the poverty culture of the social risk families. It is noted that the members of social risk families, who live in a culture, are unable to consciously perceive and analyse their lifestyle, take the responsibility (financial, social, cultural) , exploit their strong personality traits and available resources, they are feeling constant disappointment, apathy and the sense of inferiority, which they hide by moving away from community. The most important feature of the culture of poverty that is covered the passing of shabby lifestyle, habits, social skills and worldview from generation to generation. Therefore, in this Master's work, the properties and issue of social risk families is understood in the context of specific subculture. After assessing the discussed aspects, it is possible to exclude three areas that the poor man has to develop: a critical awareness, the ability to use the available resources in a targeted manner, hope and belief that with self effort it is possible to overcome poverty. Taking into account these aspects, the Master's work is based on the principles of critical awareness raising theory, proposed by P. Freire, adding the strong perspectives theory (D. Sallebey) and the hope theory (C. R. Snyder) ideas to it. Combing the three mentioned theories in work shall be treated as the effective way to overcome poverty in social risk families, or at least as a tool to decrease the phenomenon of poverty. As the tool of investigation, the qualitative methodology, that is based on humanism and the epistemology of social constructivism was chosen. The analysis of scientific literature and documents, monitoring while participatin, nonstructured interview and the analysis of the content were used to collect and process the data for this investigation.
