Metamodernism as a Reconciliation of Modernity and the Postmodern: A Therapeutic Perspective is a master thesis which investigates how metamodern discourse, viewed through a therapeutic perspective, can address significant contemporary political philosophy and cultural issues. The research explores the discourse’s potential to reconcile the opposing paradigms of modernity and postmodern, aiming to provide a framework for addressing global challenges and societal needs. The study’s objectives include analyzing the problematic field of metamodernism, conceptualizing modernity and postmodern, and identifying features that enable their reconciliation. The research addresses questions about the viability of metamodernism as a therapeutic philosophy and hypothesizes that its oscillatory approach fosters empathy, community, and individual well-being. The analysis, structured through Giddens’ theories, demonstrates that metamodernism identifies the roots of global crises in modernist principles and critiques postmodernism for its limited, localized scope and inability to provide suitable solutions. It borrows positive features from both paradigms, such as progress-oriented thinking from modernity and the critical deconstruction style of postmodernism. The findings highlight the conflictual nature of reconciling these paradigms and justify the application of a therapeutic approach based on oscillation and positive thinking. This approach emphasizes concepts such as individuality, empathy, and psychological stability, enabling metamodernism to address contemporary societal and philosophical challenges effectively. The study concludes that the therapeutic potential of metamodernism lies in its ability to foster emotional and conceptual reflection, aiding individuals in navigating existential and global crises while envisioning a sustainable future. By integrating insights from Wittgenstein and Nussbaum, it underscores the inadequacy of universalized concepts in describing today’s multifaceted contexts. Instead, the therapeutic perspective supports oscillation between ideas, empowering individuals toward emancipation. The research establishes that metamodernist discourse holds significant potential for contemporary society by reintroducing compassionate, cooperative, and non- universalized concepts into academic discussions. However, it also notes that metamodernism's reliance on individual psychological well-being and its early stage of development may limit its broader societal impact. The study’s recommendations suggest further exploration of the therapeutic applications of metamodernism in addressing global crises and its potential as a viable framework for future societal and philosophical development. It emphasizes the importance of academic discussions on reconciling paradigms and fostering interdisciplinary approaches to expand metamodernism’s relevance. |
