Abstract [eng] This thesis explores public and private narratives of exile by analysing family albums from the perspective of narrative photography. In the first part, the research on family photographs is grouped together to form a narrative-photographic approach to the research. The narrative-photographic research approach is applied in the interviews during the research, when the deportees and their descendants are not only interviewed, but also view photographs from the deportations from Lithuania by the USSR in 1941-1953. Both the interviews and the viewing of the photographs allowed us to understand how the relationship of the deportees and their relatives to the deportation was constructed, how it changed and how it created the representation of the family-self. Through eleven semi-structured interviews and the simultaneous viewing of photographs from the exile in their possession, the material was analysed through the meaning of the photographs: how they become political, how they influence the definition of Lithuanian identity. The focus is on the compatibility of multiple narratives, which is revealed through the photographs and the function of family albums in relation to exile.
