Abstract [eng] |
This paper, ‘Gender Equality in Political Discourse: Analysis of Male Politicians Statements in the 2020-2024 Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania’, examines male politicians' statements on gender equality-related topics in Seimas during the 2020–2024 term and seeks to identify discourses that are being articulated by male politicians. In 2020–2024, the Seimas was led by a relatively liberal coalition that articulated gender equality goals. However, gender equality did not become a priority in that term’s political agenda. Also, global issues such as the rise of the far right and social media movements that oppose gender equality further emphasize the need to address gender equality as a priority issue in the political science field. This study seeks to contribute to less prominent research problematizing male dominance, political masculinities, and power dynamics in gender equality and politics academic field. To explore how gender equality is discussed by Seimas members, transcripts of the 2020–2024 parliamentary sessions were analyzed by key themes - violence against women, family policy, and perceptions of women and masculinities. Analysis led to identifying three discourses that are being articulated in the Seimas: patriarchal, masculinist liberal, and feminist. These reflect diverging perspectives on gender equality. While patriarchal discourse views gender equality as disruptive to the natural order, feminist discourse emphasizes the need for systemic change. Quite a recurring masculinist liberal discourse avoids proactive engagement with systemic inequalities, showing an uncritical stance on gender inequality. The coexistence of patriarchal and feminist discourses highlights the tension in Lithuania's political landscape. While patriarchal norms remain strong, change agents in the Seimas challenge sexist language and advocate for gender equality as beneficial for all. This paper’s findings on male articulated discourses shed light on the assumptions, values, and beliefs that shape political decisions, which has an impact in sustaining or challenging gender inequality. |
