The Using of Cosmetic Products Among 5-8 th Grade Schoolchildren in Vilnius and Klaipėda Cities Research objective: To evaluate the prevalence of cosmetics use among 5th-10th grade schoolchildren in the Vilnius and Klaipeda cities and assess their safe choice of cosmetics. The main goals: 1. To evaluate the prevalence of personal care means use and its frequency among 5th-8th grade schoolchildren in the Vilnius and Klaipėda cities according to their age and gender. 2. To evaluate the prevalence of beauty cosmetics means use and its frequency among 5th-8th grade schoolchildren in the cities of Vilnius and Klaipėda according to their age and gender. 3. To evaluate the skills of the safe use of the cosmetics among 5th-8th grade schoolchildren in the cities of Vilnius and Klaipėda. 4. To determine the prevalence of the side effects due to use the cosmetics among 5th-8th grade schoolchildren in the cities of Vilnius and Klaipėda. Methods: Study type – study of prevalence. The study was performed in 5th-8th grades of 3 progymnasiums in the cities of Vilnius and Klaipėda during October – November, 2016 and January 2017. Cluster sampling was used for the study (N=789). Different questionnaires for girls and boys were designed. Questionnaires for girls included 28 questions and questionnaire for boys –for 21. For date collections and analysis was used the EpiData 3.1, , SPSS Statistics 17.0., Microsoft Excel 2013, Winpepi 11.65. Performed data analysis using descriptive statistical methods. To evaluate the statistical significance of differences between categorical variables Pirson Chi square was used as well as Fisher’s exact test when the expected values in a cell of a contingency table are below 5. Logistic regression models were created, from which odds ratio were received and calculated 95 % of confidence intervals. The difference was considered statistically significant when p<0,05. Results and conclusion: The majority of pupils surveyed take care of their body image. 84 percent of surveyed pupils use some kind of cosmetic products. The overall prevalence of personal hygiene of pupils of 5th to 8th grade in the cities of Vilnius and Klaipėda is well enough. Daily use of toothpaste and soap reaches 92 and 86 percent respectively. Greater attention should be given to the technical and duration aspects of use of these products. Girls using personal hygiene products exceed boys respectively. Instead the prevalence of these products usage is similar among classes evaluated. The most common personal hygiene products are mouth and hair care products. 40 percent of girls use intimate hygiene products every day. The amount of those girls is higher in grades 7th to 8th than in grades 5th to 6th. The most common products of decorative cosmetics used by girls surveyed are lip gloss and mascara. Daily use of decorative cosmetics is more frequently monitored among girls of grades 7th to 8th than of grades 5th to 8th. It is found that one-third of girls is using decorative cosmetics on special occasions. Most of the respondents use decorative cosmetics for beauty purposes. Pupils' knowledge of cosmetics potential damage to their health and their ability to understand the cosmetics packaging information of its contents is inadequate as much as the methods of cosmetics use and choices are questionable. Many of girls surveyed often borrow makeup products and use them until expired, regardless the expiry date. On the other hand boys generally specify that they do not care about the properties of cosmetics. Only one third of respondents care for the quality of cosmetic products. Half of the respondents claimed that they had used unsuitable cosmetic products. The percentage of those pupils is higher in grades 7th to 8th than in grades 5th to 6th. The prevailing side effects of cosmetic products are dry skin and various skin rashes. |
