SUMMARY Vilnius University Faculty of Medicine Department of Rehabilitation, Physical and Sports Medicine Master Degree of Rehabilitation THE EFFICACY OF SCOLIOSIS TREATMENT USING SCHROTH METHOD FOR CHILDREN AND TEENAGERS BREATHING AND POSTURE PARAMETERS Rehabilitation Masters's Thesis The Author: VU rehabilitation master degree II course student Karol Darasevič Academic advisor: Prof. dr. Juozas Raistenskis, Vilnius University Faculty of Medicine Department of Rehabilitation, Physical and Sports Medicine. The aim of research work: Evaluate Schroth method for children and teenagers with idiopathic scoliosis breathing and posture parameters. Tasks of work: 1. Evaluate Schroth method for children and teenagers respiratory functions. 2. Explore the Schroth method for posture parameters. 3. Compare Schroth and traditional physical therapy groups. Materials and methods: • Breath hold tests • Chest wall excursion measurements • Height measurement of standing normally and extended • DIERS Formetric 4D measurement • Flamingo test Results and conclusion: After 10 sessions using the Schroth method significantly improved breath holding tests results, but significant difference between the groups was not found. Schroth method group was able to hold breath longer in inhale and exhale phase during second testing , but there was no difference with the traditional physical therapy group. Chest excursion results although improved, but not statistically significantly. From posture evaluating parameters Schroth group had a statistically significant improvement only in height when standing upright and in elongated position but these results do not differ from the traditional physical therapy group. Trunk appearance sacles results have improved, but not statistically significantly. Other posture evaluating tests scores also increased, but there was no statistically significant difference found. Traditional physical therapy group significantly improved posture evaluation trunk appearance scale for physicians (TAPS-Phy) and this test results were significantly different after 10 sessions compared to Schroth group. The conclusion is that traditional physical therapy procedure is more effective treatment for scoliosis in comparison with the Schroth method using TAPS-Phy scale. Tested with Diers formetric 4D apparatus and TRACE test a statistically significant difference between the groups was not found. |
