Vilnius University, Faculty of Medicine. 2017; Vilnius The aim of the research To carry out the research on the need forpharmaceutical care services for patients with diabetes and pharmacist-led-intervention in the public pharmacies. Objectives 1. To analyse the sociodemographic characteristics of the patients with diabetes. 2. To carry out the survey of the pharmacy patients with diabetes regarding the use of medications, diabetes control, chronic complications of diabetes and other chronic diseases. 3. To determine the need for pharmaceutical care services for patients with diabetes in public pharmacies. 4. To assess the opinion of the pharmaceutical specialists on the possibility to provide services of the pharmacist-led-intervention to the patients with diabetes. Methods of the research Theoretical analysis. The theoretical part of this research reviews the scientific literature on the aspects of the provision of pharmaceutical care services for patients with diabetes in other countries. Empirical methods. The quantitative method - survey, was used for this research. The two-way anonymous survey was carried out. 378 patients with diabetes who visited the public pharmacies in Lithuania and 145 pharmaceutical specialists participated in the survey. The representativeness of the research survey is ensured. Conclusions 1. Respondents of various ages participated in the research (4 – 86 years old).A higher number of women participated in the research (60 percent). 44 percent of the respondents have been suffering from the disease for more than 10 years. Patients with type 1 diabetes - 54.5 percent; patients with type 2 diabetes -45.5 percent. 2. The insulin therapy was applied to patients with type 1 diabetes (96.6 percent)(n=206), while the patients with type 2 diabetes usedoral antidiabetic drugs(69.8 percent)(n=172). A good glycemic control was observed in 56 percent of the respondents. 32 percent of the respondents suffered from chronic complications of diabetes. The most common - diabetic retinopathy (36 percent), diabetic polyneuropathy (34 percent). 44 percent of the respondents suffered from other chronic diseases (n=378). 3. 20 percent of the respondents expressed their need for the pharmaceutical care services. According to the respondents, the intervention in public pharmacies shall be carried out on the basis of the following aspects:use of medications (38 percent), prevention of chronic complication of diabetes (36.2 percent), lifestyle correction (21 percent). 4. According to 69 percent of the pharmaceutical specialists, the pharmacists could improve the health indicators of the patientswith diabetes. The effectiveness of the intervention shall be ensured by the continuousmonitoring of the patients with diabetes (44 percent), which shall be paid from the State budget (42.7 percent) or covered by the funds of the owners of pharmacies (30 percent). |
