Abstract [eng] |
Construction of Identity in Jaroslavas Melnikas‘ "Tolima erdvė" and Kristina Buožytė‘s "Aurora" The primary concern of the present MA paper is to analyse Jaroslavas Melnikasʼ novel “Tolima erdvė“ (2008) and Kristina Buožytėʼs movie “Aurora“ (2011). The study aims at analysing the construction of identity, employing the concept of the narrative identity as a theoretical approach. The analysis attempts to find similarities in different discourses concerned with the construction and the understanding of identity. Based on the concept of the processualityof identity, the paper claims that it is nonexistent without a narrative. Identity is established through the relationship to the individual and the social other, the belonging to a community or the distance from it, and the concept of the body. The other is vital to the establishment and the perception of one's identity, since the presence of the other reveals the individual traits, thus self-perception comes into existence. Since the self is perceived only through the other and its interpretation, the establishment of identity in solitude is impossible. The lack of the other causes the crisis of identity. The topics of sight and blindness are also important here and are related to the binary opposition of knowing and ignorance. The analysis also touches upon the relationship between certain cultural contexts, such as myths, and the establishment of identity. The present paper might be interesting for those concerned with the problems of identity and story-telling, and their significance in contemporary art. |
