Abstract [eng] |
The Discourse on Dreams: Jonas Mekas' "My Nightlife" The semiotic analysis object of the master's degree's research is dream disourse in J. Mekas dream diary „My Nightlife“. The main questions raised to the analyzed objects: is it possible to describe the structure of a dream and its means of expression? How can we recognize that a written text represents the dream? Does the dream discourse contain peculiarities related to both narrative, and discoursive level? Can the description of a dream be considered as the translation from verbal discourse into visual discourse? The research is built on theoretical and practical works published by semioticians as J. Lotman, A. J. Greimas, K. Nastopka, also psychoanalysts G. C. Jung, S. Freud. The dream analysis goes through the figurative and narrative levels. The main object of the thesis is to apply the tools of semiotic analysis and analyze the structure of the dream description in literature. It is important to make a conclusion that written dreams in literature do not contain any causal connections between narratives of events, are usually described in present tense, which creates impression of spoken language, and are full of repetitive abstract words, such as somebody, somewhere, etc. These features often create an impression of contrast between the concrete, revealed in the opening stage of a dream when location and precise time of the subject is indicated, and the abstract, which appears during the development of act or unexpected break of discursive situation. Such type of dream construction, when the pronouns used do not indicate any concrete objects, as well as the absence of logical and causal connection, contribute to the specific process of dream creation. |
