Abstract [eng] Music Therapy Demand on Multiple Sclerosis Patients Multiple sclerosis (MS) is one of the most complicated neurological diseases starting at the age of 18 – 50 years. Patients suffer not only from physicalimpairment and emotionaldisorders. This disease causes disability for young employable people. It has negative impact for quality of life. The treatment of MSis directed towards immune processes and clinical symptoms though insufficient attention is paid to development of psychosocial skills. Scientific research reveals the effectiveness of music therapy (MT) for solving emotional, social problems. To date there are no published scientific researches about the need forMT in MS in Lithuania. Aim of the study: to analize the need for MT in MS patients. Objectives: 1. To identify physicians‘opinion onMTin neurology, for MS patients; 2. To identify awareness of MT of patients with MS; 3. To analize patients‘ relationship with MT; 4. To identify the need for MT and associated expectations of patients with MS; 5. To compare the need for MT in both groups (physicians and patients). Study participants:patients diagnosed with MS, specialised physicians. Methods:method of questionnaire survey was used. Two different questionnaireswere created for patients and physicians for analysis of need forMT inMS. Physicians‘ questionnaire was distributed in Vilnius University Hospital Santaros Klinikos departments of Neurology and Rehabilitation. Patients‘ questionnaire was distributed in the Center of MS at Vilnius University Hospital Santaros Klinikos out-patients‘ department and sent by e-mail for members of Lithuanian MS association in Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, Panevėžys, Alytus, Šiauliai. MS Exel 2007 program was used for data analysis. Fisher test was used for data comparison. Results: 96% of physicians state that emotional problems are the most prominent for MS patients and 64% affirmproblems of social life. 80% believe that MT would be useful as an instrument of non-medical treatment. 81% of patients have heard about MT in neurology and 57% express a need for MT. MT would be an effective intervention for improvement of psychosocial skills. Both groups agree that MT is necessary for MS patients however there is no statistically significant difference between these groups (p=0,167). Keywords: multiple sclerosis, music therapy, emotional disorders, social life.
