Abstract [eng] Study of Music Therapy Effect for Oncological Patients Emotional State and Anxiety During the Preoperative Period The Author – Oksana Šleževičiūtė Work Leader – Dr. Giedrė Bulotienė Work consultant – Prof. dr. Aldona Vilkelienė Work objective: To evaluate the cancer patients emotional state and experienced anxiety during the preoperative period by using music therapy. To achieve this, the following tasks were taken: to analyze the music therapists recommended methods and tools for oncology patients in the preoperative period; to evaluate oncology patients experiencing anxiety and emotional state of the preoperative period; to investigate the effects of music therapy in oncology patients encounter anxiety and emotional state of the preoperative period. Materials and methods: Objects and methods of the study. The study involved 30 cancer patients, 26 patients were breast cancer patients, stages I – IV and 4 patients - men who suffered from various forms of lung tumors. Before the surgery they were treated at the National Cancer Institute’s department for Breast Disease Surgery and Oncology and the department of Thoracic Surgery and Oncology. The study used: the emotional state assessment adapted to the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the distress thermometer (Distress Thermometer); the analysis of medical records; the music therapy methods used were the receptive music therapy (listening to music recordings, the development of musical visualizations while listening to music) and the active music therapy (playing a musical instrument, improvisation, the writing of diary before and after the sessions. The research results and conclusions: Evaluation of oncology patients experienced preoperative anxiety and emotional state was found that before surgery, patients were expressed as marginal and clinically significant anxiety and depression level (over 7 points), felt little distress (4 points), and suffered from depression, sadness, fear, apathy, anxiety. Examination of the impact of music therapy in oncology patients encounter preoperative anxiety and emotional state has been found that after the music therapy, general anxiety and depression levels decreased by an average 3.1 times, distress level decreased by 3.6 times, improved mood, decreased patient suffering from stress, anxiety, depression, fear, sadness, anger, apathy.
