Abstract [eng] |
Reading clubs have been an extremely popular community activity in the world for several decades. They are spreading rapidly in Lithuania. The significance of reading clubs in Lithuania has been discussed in a few scholarly publications and in the public space, but a more detailed and analytical/philosophical research on the necessity of such communities is still absent. The paper discusses the ontological importance of reading and reading clubs and looks into the nature of the reading experience and the effects of participation in a reading club. From a phenomenological perspective, it is clear that reading extends the boundaries of time and space, allowing the individual to experience more than is possible in “objective” reality. During the process of reading, the individuals are not merely passive receivers of a pre-generated message. On the contrary, the participation in a reading club enables them to understand literary texts more fully, empowers to think independently and critically, and helps to build and strengthen democratic community ties. |
