Abstract [eng] Working time is defined as any period during which the worker is working, at the employer's disposal and carrying out his activity or duties. This concept of working time is enshrined both in Directive No. 2003/88/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council and in the Labour Code of the Republic of Lithuania, which transferred the provisions of the mentioned directive. The Labour Code of the Republic of Lithuania not only establishes the definition but also regulates other periods considered working time under national law. These periods are extensively discussed in this Master’s paper. It is important to note that the Labour Code of the Republic of Lithuania not only defines the concept of working time but also imposes limits on it. These restrictions include maximum working hours, minimum rest periods, overtime, and other norms governing the organization of working time. The obligation to limit employees’ working hours arises from the Constitution of the Republic of Lithuania, which grants the legislature the right to determine the duration of working time, as well as recognizing workers’ right to a rest period, leisure time, and safe and healthy working conditions. Notably, the Article 121 of the Labour Code of the Republic of Lithuania specifies that requirements for maximum working hours, minimum rest periods, working time schedules, and record-keeping rules may vary across different economic sectors. In other words, limitations on employees’ working time may differ depending on the field of activity. This master’s thesis not only defines the concept of working time but also analyzes it’s limitations in various employment relationships, specifically focusing on the transport sector (road, rail, aviation, and seafarers) and the healthcare sector.
