It is crucial to understand the risks involved and implement preventative measures, as complications from liver surgery can be serious and even life-threatening. One major concern during liver surgery is bleeding, due to the liver's rich blood supply. To minimize blood loss, careful dissection and the use of hemostatic medications are essential. Additionally, temporary methods to block blood vessels may be employed to further reduce bleeding. Another common complication, especially after significant resections of the hepatic hilum, is bile leakage. This can lead to abscesses or infected fluid collections. To prevent this issue, it is important to meticulously dissect and ligate the bile ducts. If the remaining liver volume after surgery is insufficient, there is a significant risk of postoperative liver failure. A thorough preoperative evaluation of liver volume and function ensures that enough healthy liver tissue remains after the procedure.
