Abstract [eng] Master’s thesis object – Istanbul’s streets advertisements with the image of a woman. Thesis goal – to find out how the interaction of Islamism and secularism in Turkey is manifested in the depiction of the female body and social roles through street advertisements. The objectives of the thesis: to review how the position of women, emphasizing the image of the body and social role, has been formed historically in Turkey since the 19th century and what influence religion and the legal system have had on it; to find out how elements of the ideology of Islamism are manifested in the portrayal of the female body and role in Turkish street advertisements; to analyse how elements of secularism are reflected in the representation of the female body and social roles in street advertisements in Turkey; to summarize how the interaction of Islamism and secularism is manifested through the female body and social role in Turkey. The subject of the research is the interaction of the ideologies of secularism and Islamism manifested in street advertisements through the depiction of the female body and social role. Using qualitative methodology and visual analysis, the conclusions were reached that most often advertisements are of the secularist ideology of the female body and social role, showing her as an open-bodied, independent and self-sufficient woman. The ideology of Islamism is revealed in a third of advertisements and depicts the traditional role of a woman through belonging to a man and her closed body. The interaction of secularism and Islamism in the portrayal of a woman's body and role has been observed - it is revealed through the liberal Islamic approach to women's clothing. The interaction has also been observed in maintaining traditional female social roles, but depicting an open, sexy body. The master's thesis may be useful for scholars developing the topics of the female body and social roles in Turkey and those interested in feminist theories.
