The dissertation aims to define the concept of modern leisure, to formulate theoretical guidelines of the research and to describe the forms of modern leisure culture in the years 1900-1914 in Lithuania. The period of investigation in Lithuania, as well as in the centres’ of the Russian Empire, was particularly intense: rapid economic growth, industrialization, urbanization and social change significantly marked urban modernity as well as modern leisure culture. The research of the press, transformation of the private spaces and uprise of the public spaces, consumerism and mass culture in the end of 19 th century shows how new leisure culture crystallises between different cultural and social divisions as well as traces the evolution of the urban core in the nineteenth century. The dissertation shows how new modern culture spread new imaginary about the leisure and shows how leisure culture was marked by the competition of different attitudes about society and its future. |
