Abstract [eng] High sodium consumption is the most important dietary behavioural risk factor and has been linked to an increased risk of kidney diseases, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases and stroke, gastric cancer and osteoporosis. Reduction of salt intake is among the most cost-effective interventions to prevent the epidemic of arterial hypertension, which is associated with cardiovascular and renal diseases, and to improve the population health and life expectancy. This is the first population-based cross-sectional study in Lithuania assessing sodium (salt) and potassium intake, as well as albuminuria, using 24 h urine samples. This urine test is considered the gold standard for assessing sodium (salt), potassium intake and albuminuria. The results of our study will allow Lithuania to align with other countries, while also providing well- contextualised, high-quality and reliable national data regarding high salt consumption.
