| Abstract [eng] |
Lithuanian adverbs in -čia and Latvian adverbs in -šus appear to go back to a Proto(-East) Baltic class of deverbal adverbs of manner in *ti̯ān. It is obvious that *ti̯ān contains the ā-stem instrumental singular *ān, although the most likely derivational base are action nouns in *-ti-. This, however, is typologically rare. As a way out, I propose that instr. sg. *ti̯ān was grammaticalized as a converb of manner, and only much later demoted to a deverbal adverb. This is in accordance with other facts suggesting that Proto-Baltic acquired a complex system of infinitives and converbs, probably under Uralic influence, and later lost it. |
